Pieter Bruegel and the Art of Laughter (Ahmanson-Murphy Fine Arts Books)

Category: Arts & Photography
Review "In Pieter Bruegel and the Art of Laughter Walter Gibson makes it abundantly clear that laughter is a key feature in many of Bruegel's works. He examines witty and humorous elements in Bruegel's paintings, prints, and drawings and creates a context for understanding them as part of sixteenth-century culture. The material Gibson brings to bear on Bruegel will be new to many. This book will appeal to art historians and anyone interested in sixteenth-century thought and culture." - John Oliver Hand, Curator of Northern Renaissance Paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington "This book offers a much needed, and long overdue alternative to the primarily moralizing approach to Northern Renaissance and Baroque art and the works of Pieter Bruegel. Walter Gibson goes way beyond what art history has offered to date, giving a new, more balanced reading of Bruegel's art." - Alison Stewart, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln" From the Inside Flap "In Pieter Bruegel and the Art of Laughter Walter Gibson makes it abundantly clear that laughter is a key feature in many of Bruegel's works. The book provides an abundance of evidence for the importance of laughter in the responses these works were intended to provoke, illuminating not only the paintings and prints of this much misunderstood artist, but also the role of laughter in sixteenth-century culture as a whole."--David Freedberg, Professor of Art History at Columbia University

Outdoor Lighting: Physics, Vision and Perception

Category: Arts & Photography
From the Back Cover This book covers theoretical aspects that are at the basis of lighting installations. It focuses on insight, backgrounds and coherence. There are many fundamental aspects that are essential for understanding why different ways to install and use lighting give different results. A purely pragmatic approach to solving practical lighting problems will lead to pitfalls. But as this book shows, on the basis of fundamental considerations on optics, light sources and vision, causes and effects that tend to be overlooked by lighting engineers and designers can be identified. The selection of subjects in this book is based on more than 50 years of experience in studying the fundamental and practical applications of lighting and vision. The author has given classes on these topics, in master courses at post-graduate and post-doctoral levels. Audience: graduate students, researchers, designers, engineers and consultants engaged in lighting, public lighting, lighting equipment and installations. About the Author Born 1931 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Duco Schreuder received his doctorate in 1964 at Eindhoven Technical University ("The lighting of vehicular traffic tunnels") and extended this with an MA in Philosophy (specialization psychology) at Haarlem International Institute in 1972. Combining this unique overview of light studies and the human consequences of light technology he has extensive experience working with Lighting Laboratories, Philips, Eindhoven on research in vision and in lighting for roads, tunnels and vehicles. From 1968 - 1993 he was a senior researcher with the Institute for Road Safety Research SWOV in Leidschendam in charge of the field of lighting and vision (signs, signals, road and vehicle lighting). Since 1993 he has worked as an independent consultant in the general fields of lighting and safety, studies on the theory of road accidents, road safety in developing countries, transport lighting, tunnel lighting, influence of weather and environment on road accidents, social safety and lighting, crime and lighting, traffic lights and signals, road markings, lighting and astronomy, environmental impact of lighting. He is the author and coauthor of several books and well over 300 scientific publications, mainly on traffic, lighting, vision, road safety and related areas. He has held Chairmanship of a large number of national and international institutions and working groups, particularly in the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage CIE, in the Centre Europenne de Normalisation CEN and in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD on areas of road and tunnel lighting, vehicle lighting, signing and signalling in road traffic, road accidents and road safety, public safety and light pollution. He is an internationally recognised expert in these fields.

Giovanni Bellini

Category: Arts & Photography
Review "A virtuosic analysis of the methods of one of the quattrocento''s painterly superstars--Giovanni Bellini--but the general reader will perhaps gain the most pleasure from Bätschmann''s insights into the fierce rivalries between artists, the chaos and clutter of the era''s studios and workshops, and the hard-fought battles to secure patronage. . . . The great virtue of Bätschmann''s book is that it combines this intimate portrayal of the artistic milieu with a scholarly examination of Bellini''s career. . . . Oskar Bätschmann is to be applauded for producing a scholarly yet passionate book."--The Tablet (Jonathan Wright The Tablet 20080730) "Imaginative, rich in insights and exceptionally stimulating. . . . Admirable monograph which should invigorate Bellini studies. . . . An elegant volume which makes the products of many university presses look like desktop efforts."--Art Newspaper (The Art Newspaper ) “This splendid monograph is a thoughtful and carefully reasoned presentation of Bellini''s career as an artist, with ancillary discussions of contemporary Venetian painting. Bätschmann has amassed an extraordinary amount of information—historical, stylistic, bibliographical—in a generally chronological presentation of Bellini''s career that covers not only the artist''s life and production, but also reconstructions of some of his lost works and references to others that were critical in establishing the artist''s reputation . . . This book will interest not only students of Bellini, but also those who wish to understand the motivating factors in the history of Venetian Renaissance painting. Recommended.”—Choice (Choice ) About the Author Oskar Bätschmann is professor of the history of art at the University of Bern, and codirector of the Institute for the History of Art. He is also the coauthor of Hans Holbein.

Cindy Sherman: The Complete Untitled Film Stills

Category: Arts & Photography
From Publishers Weekly Sherman's provocative and much-discussed Untitled Film Stills series, created between 1977 and 1980, is collected for the first time in this 9.5" x 11.25" volume from MoMA, which purchased the entire set of 69 shots in 1995. Sherman's mysterious and perplexing "portraits" should not really be called "self," since Sherman appears solely in the guises of others, donning the clothing, wigs and makeup of various female '50s and '60s film "types" (the forgotten wife, the boozy hussy, the working girl, etc.) and elevating the art of playing dress-up to a whole new level. In her disarmingly honest introduction to the book, Sherman says of the European film stars like Simone Signoret, Sophia Loren or Jeanne Moreau, from whom she drew her inspiration, "What I was interested in was when they were almost expressionless," a rare occurrence in posed and artificial publicity shots. But while Sherman's photographs may initially resemble film stills, their grainy, dodgy quality (Sherman says, "I didn't care much about the print quality; the photographs were supposed to look like they cost fifty cents"); her disturbingly blank expression and chameleon-like ability to disappear into character; and the backgrounds of empty New York City streets and rundown lofts (in some ways, the photos act as a historical archive of a time when a less-gentrified New York functioned as a giant playground for artists) all conspire to give necessary dissonance to the myths Sherman explores. Sherman began making the series at the age of 23, and it soon established her as a major voice in the contemporary art scene, adding a much-needed female presence in what is more often than not a hyper-macho field. In the process of questioning the portrayal of women, Sherman questioned the art of portraiture itself and its uneasy place in 20th-century American society, opening a different path on which to proceed.
