Photography and Spirit

Category: Exercise & Fitness
Review "Judicious, sympathetic, and richly illustrated."--Art Newspaper  (Marina Warner Art Newspaper 20071205) "A rounded picture of the phenomenon. . . . Overall Harvey has done an excellent job in outlining how the three domains fed into the phenomenon of spirit photography, and how its fascination endures."—Tom Ruffles, Fortean Times  (Tom Ruffles Fortean Times ) "This book will fascinate readers with its photographs of spirit contact and spirit presence. If you want to look at ghosts on film, these 80 illustrations will more than satisfy your interest . . .  This is a journey through the surreal, an active and in-depth examination of the numerous myths and cultural history surrounding spirit photography. . . . For the general reader, those interested in the paranormal, or the experienced ghost hunter, this is an ideal book to have in the home library. . . . Literate, well-written, and highly entertaining are the three words to best describe this book by John Harvey. Highly recommended!"– Lee Prosser, Ghostvillage.com  (Lee Prosser GhostVillage.com ) "Harvey captures a modern technological zeitgeist, a literal ghost in teh machine that mixes and merges the mystical, the artistic, and the scientific. At once a primer on optical advances and art history, Photography and Spirit is also about religious devotion and the ways new visual technologies affect teh beliefs and behaviors of religious people."--Journal of the American Academy of Religion (S. Brent Plate Journal of the American Academy of Religion ) About the Author John Harvey is professor in the School of Art at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

The Yoga of Power: Tantra, Shakti, and the Secret Way

Category: Exercise & Fitness
Review "Soon Evola will be an immovable object in the field of serious esotericism in the English-speaking world, as he already is for readers of Italian, French, and German. The Yoga of Power puts to shame those modern writers who have degraded Tantra to a subject for New Age sex manuals. To read his descriptions of the higher spiritual states is like watching a champion mountain-climber on a vertical glacier." ( Gnosis Magazine ) "This richly layered and exacting work will challenge and fascinate." ( MG, Napra Trade Journal ) Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Italian

The Fat Flush Fitness Plan

Category: Exercise & Fitness
Amazon.com Review The Fat Flush Fitness Plan, written by a powerhouse team, offers Joanie Greggains' detailed exercise program, designed to complement Ann Louise Gittleman's The Fat Flush Plan. Gittleman is a high-profile nutritionist, frequently featured in the media. Veteran fitness expert Greggains, author of Fit Happens, hosted television's long-running "Morning Stretch" and leads 15 workout videos. Greggains emphasizes low-impact aerobics, weight training, stretching, more sleep, and calmer living. The eating program (you'll need Gittleman's other books for the details) hinges on Gittleman's premise that "cleansing the liver and the lymphatic system is absolutely crucial for physical health, weight loss, and an overall sense of well-being." This isn't a quick-fix program, but a long-term, lifestyle change including yoga, walking or rebounding, strength training with a weighted ball, stretching, lymphatic massage, and aromatherapy baths. Start with Phase 1: "Detox, Start Moving--and Relax"; add strength training in Phase 2: "Build Lean Muscle Mass"; increase cardio and change the strength routine in Phase 3: "Lymph-Fit/Compound Strength and Stretching Plan." All phases present a step-by-step, clearly illustrated exercise program. The book is nicely designed, with clear photographs, boxed tips, write-in questionnaires, pledges, and a sample journal. --Joan Price From the Back Cover Building on the highly successful weight-loss program presented in her bestseller The Fat Flush Plan, nutrition expert Ann Louise Gittleman tackles a startling truth about health and fitness: while most Americans don't exercise enough, many over-exercise--a practice that can actually sabotage weight loss efforts, sap energy, and cause injury, especially when combined with insufficient sleep, excessive stress, and poor eating habits. Non-Neoplastic Advanced Lung Disease

Category: Exercise & Fitness
From School Library Journal Grade 10 Up—Adams's subject matter is fairly sophisticated. It focuses on how skeletal remains are often used in cases where the victim has been dead a long time or those in which the body is too ravaged to identify. He offers a fairly detailed look at how bone scientists study remains to determine everything from sex to height to facial characteristics. There is a great deal of discussion of various bones and growth patterns; how bodies decompose and are ravaged by the environment, insects, and time; and how the different types of trauma that can cause death are evidenced in skeletal remains. Advanced biology students will appreciate the details, but less-informed students might find the reading frustrating. Sapse focuses on the court system itself, detailing the steps in the legal system, discussing the various types of crimes and punishments, various pleas, and how forensics fits into the larger legal picture. The title might be misleading as readers are likely to expect more information on how various forensic techniques are used in the courtroom. While there is a chapter on that topic, the majority of the book deals in a very general way with our basic court system. Useful books, but not for your average readers.—Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Part of the Inside Forensic Science series, this offers an overview of the field. Written by a forensic anthropologist who works for the New York City medical examiner, the book begins with the basics, explaining what forensic anthropology is and introducing its professional subdivisions, applications, and terminology. Subsequent chapters go into greater detail about specific topics, including how skeletal remains are analyzed. The challenging but readable text is accompanied by diagrams, color illustrations, and sidebars. Extensive end matter includes a helpful glossary and a list of book and Web resources. A solid introduction to a high-interest topic. Ed SullivanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
