The Art of War by Sun Tzu

Amazon.com Review The Art of War is the Swiss army knife of military theory--pop out a different tool for any situation. Folded into this small package are compact views on resourcefulness, momentum, cunning, the profit motive, flexibility, integrity, secrecy, speed, positioning, surprise, deception, manipulation, responsibility, and practicality. Thomas Cleary's translation keeps the package tight, with crisp language and short sections. Commentaries from the Chinese tradition trail Sun-tzu's words, elaborating and picking up on puzzling lines. Take the solitary passage: "Do not eat food for their soldiers." Elsewhere, Sun-tzu has told us to plunder the enemy's stores, but now we're not supposed to eat the food? The Tang dynasty commentator Du Mu solves the puzzle nicely, "If the enemy suddenly abandons their food supplies, they should be tested first before eating, lest they be poisoned." Most passages, however, are the pinnacle of succinct clarity: "Lure them in with the prospect of gain, take them by confusion" or "Invincibility is in oneself, vulnerability is in the opponent." Sun-tzu's maxims are widely applicable beyond the military because they speak directly to the exigencies of survival. Your new tools will serve you well, but don't flaunt them. Remember Sun-tzu's advice: "Though effective, appear to be ineffective." --Brian Bruya --This text refers to the edition. Review "The most useful and important book ever written for aspiring leaders."--Toronto Sun TimesFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Cool Time: A Hands-on Plan for

Review "I took Cool Time home last weekend, and have instituted its principles over the last week, and I LOVE IT! I would love to have Steve Prentice on the show. Is he touring? I have roughly two dozen time management books, and I hate them all. His is the only one I’ve ever truly liked and believed in. It’s a godsend, and I MUST share it with my viewers." Bridget Weiss, TV Producer, Edmonton AB   "I am 139 pages into your book and I swear to all things holy that your ideas have put into shape what I’ve been trying to improve in my professional life for a long time...the organization of my day. My inbox has been empty all week because I am organizing my tasks into workable time slots. My clients are getting regular call-backs and I’ve put 1,000 prospective room nights ($170,000+) on our books for August because I’ve scheduled in Keystone prospecting time into my day between 1 and 2pm…. I have to say that your ideas are making an immediate impact on my daily life. Ian Turgeon, Hotel Sales Manager, Fairmont Royal York, Toronto "I had to write and tell how much I enjoyed your book! I have read over 200 time-management books and while they have all managed to say much the same thing in the same way, you found an invigorating way to explain time management that kept me interested throughout. Thanks for your work and wisdom. It made an impact." Stephanie Dickison, Journalist "I have been applying the Cool Time principles for a month or so now and have managed to

Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives

Review From the reviews: "Women of any age will benefit from this research-based and very readable volume. A particular strength lies in its repositioning the focus of women in their later years from loss, disability, and decline to challenge, resilience, and empowerment."- Judith Worell, Dept. Educational and Counseling Psychology, University of Kentucky "Finally a book about women at midlife that is scientifically grounded, broad in its choice of topics, and a pleasure to read! Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives, a book edited by Varda Muhlbauer and Joan Chrisler, addresses a range of issues – from friendship to health to work—encountered by women who are in their middle years in industrialized societies. A key contribution of this edited book is that mid-life issues are examined in historical and social context. An exciting aspect of this book is that it translates scientific information into practical recommendations. I highly recommend it for both graduate students and professionals. Researchers, teachers and clinicians interested in midlife will find it a useful resource."- Silvia Sara Canetto, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Colorado State University"Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives, edited by Varda Muhlbauer and Joan Chrisler, is an engrossing book that addresses a long-standing need in the literature on women. The book moves away from the traditional way of viewing older women, which is concerned with deficits. Instead, it focuses on ways in which older women are living longer and healthier lives which are both personally and professionally fulfilling. The book is a must-read for researchers and clinicians and will serve to stimulate research and theory on women over 50. In-depth reviews of research in areas that have received relatively little attention in the literature shed new light on issues, such as, women's body image, exercise and leisure activities, sex at midlife, women's friendships, work, and retirement."- Gwendolyn L. Gerber, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York "Muhlbauer and Chrisler have put together a readable volume on the importance of the societal impact on the aging population. … Implicit to the material this book presents is the necessity to explore change and empowerment. … Though intended primarily as a textbook, this volume will be at home in a library’s circulating collection. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through professionals." (G. M. Greenberg, Choice, Vol. 45 (1), 2007) "Women over 50 is a welcome addition to the literature on mature women. ... This book describes the lives of women over 50 in a matter-of-fact manner and with the same language life would be described at any other age, that is, as having good points and bad points, external constraints and developmental issues. It is a practical book, providing real insight into the quality of experience during this stage of life, including some distinctly nitty-gritty details." (P. Derry, Sex Roles) From the Back Cover A woman’s middle age had traditionally been regarded as a time of loss and decline. But in the wake of the women's movement and other societal and cultural events, a profound shift has taken place. Far from being marginalized, midlife women stand at the forefront of a great transformation of cultural perceptions and attitudes. They are rejecting stereotypes, embracing new opportunities, and forming what this important book terms "a new collective middle-aged identity." Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives analyzes the challenges, benefits, coping strategies, problems, and accomplishments associated with the midlife experience. Ten chapters present the state of research (and correct longstanding myths) regarding significant aspects of middle-aged women's lives: Mind-body: illness, body image, exercise Love, romance, and sexuality Friendship and support systems "The sandwich generation" Re-creating the role of grandmothers Retirement and financial stability Using personal empowerment to empower others Quality of life and future directions Women over 50 bridges a major knowledge gap in the feminist-psychology literature, making it an essential resource for clinicians and advanced students. It balances optimism and realism about older women’s lives—and younger women’s futures.

The Highest Goal: The Secret That Sustains You in Every Moment

Review "The Highest Goal is the distillation of years of accumulated wisdom from a great teacher." -- From the foreword by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great "The Highest Goal shows all of us how we can achieve a meaningful and fulfilled life from our highest aspects." -- Heidi Roizen, Managing Director, Mobius Venture Capital "This incredible book examines the life-force that gives us a reason for living!" -- John Renesch, author of Getting to the Better Future "With his revolutionary and refreshing insights, Ray helps you discover and pursue your highest goal." -- Don Maruska, author of How Great Decisions Get Made From the Publisher Dubbed "the most creative man in Silicon Valley" by Fast Company magazine, Michael Ray created and taught Stanford University's celebrated Personal Creativity in Business course for 25 years. From the beginning, Ray's course had a more profound impact on graduates than he'd ever intended. They seemed to blossom, to have access to some secret source of energy and inspiration. They found new ways to contribute to their organizations, thrived on diversity, fought gracefully, treated others with compassion, acceptance, appreciation, and respect. As one graduate put it, "This is transformation that works and lasts." Ray came to realize that his creativity course was helping people discover what he calls their "highest goal"-the one force that gives real meaning to your life, that speaks to the very core of your being. It's what makes you feel connected, motivated and sustained. It has nothing to do with worldly success or achievement, but Ray found that all of the successful people who had been through his course had a sustained connection to it. In fact, it was what they ultimately attributed their success to. Here, through practical exercises, stories and reflections, Ray helps you discover your own highest goal. By getting in touch with this inner resource, following a path in tune with it, and letting it inform your every decision, you'll vastly improve not only your own life, but also the lives of everyone around you. Ray shows you how to open this inner font of creativity, compassion, and courage.

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future

From Publishers Weekly With visionary flare, Pink argues that business and everyday life will soon be dominated by right-brain thinkers. He identifies the roots and implications of transitioning from a society dominated by left-brain thinkers into something entirely different—although at times, he seems to be exhorting rather than observing the trend. As a narrator, Pink delivers in a well executed manner, with occasional hints of enthusiasm. He maintains a steady voice that is well suited for a business-oriented text, and his crisp pronunciation and consistent pace keeps listeners engaged and at ease. Updated with new material. A Riverhead paperback (reviewed online). (Feb.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. --This text refers to the edition. Review Will give you a new way to look at your work, your talent, your future.
